He began playing the violin under the guidance of his father at the age of three. While still at the Elementary School of Arts in Vrútky, he made several recordings for Slovak Radio. He completed special studies at the Žilina Conservatory with Prof. Bohumil Urban, and from 1999 studied at the Vienna Conservatory in the class of world-famous Prof. Boris Kuschnir.
He also participated in several master classes with renowned teachers – Eduard Grach, Mintsch Mintschev, and Herman Krebbers. His leading achievements include winning the young musicians meeting in Córdoba (1996), the Eurovision award – Grand Prix Young Musician of the Year (2002), first place at the Tibor Varga competition (2003), the New Talent International Tribune of Young Performers award (2005), and victory at the David Oistrakh competition in Moscow (2008).
Also notable was a concert for the Prince of Wales in 2003 at Windsor Castle with the participation of Mstislav Rostropovich. He has often performed at the Seiji Ozawa International Academy in Switzerland. In 2009, he received an award from the Minister of Culture of the Slovak Republic for outstanding artistic achievements and successful international representation of Slovak performing arts. In 2011, the Tatra Banka Foundation awarded him the "Young Creator" award in the music category.
As an extremely sought-after soloist, he has collaborated with many renowned conductors and has been a guest of the world's leading orchestras. He is also involved in chamber music, and has been a teacher at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien since 2014.
Dalibor Karvay’s instrument is made by the Viennese violin maker, Julia Maria Pasch.
